How Angry Are You? Take The Anger Quiz To Find Out

Is it okay to feel angry?

We all experience a whole range of emotions – some more strongly than others. For some, that emotion is…anger. People often ask me this question. Is it okay to feel angry? While feeling it is natural, what we do with it is important. This powerful emotion can fuel us in a positive way and spur us into action. However, if we don’t know how to manage it well, it damages our relationships and our own well-being.

There are two ways we tend to deal with anger – we either suppress it or express it inappropriately. When we suppress it and push it down, it doesn’t really go away. It comes out at some point or the other, maybe in another bigger form, and causes more damage. Holding on to it, till it turns into resentment and bitterness is surely NOT self-love. Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal, with the intent of throwing it at someone else – you are the one that gets burned. 

The second thing that we do is that we express it in a way that might hurt people around us. Sometimes, we may even take it out on someone else without realizing it. 

So how do I manage my anger?

Since you cannot eliminate it from your life, no matter what you do, it is good to learn how to handle it when it happens. And so, the starting point is to create greater awareness. Ask yourself this question, ‘what pent-up anger am I holding on to, that I need to release for my own well-being?’ Here are some things you can do to cope with it in a better way:

• Express your feelings by writing an anger letter. Tear/flush it later.
• Take a brisk walk
• Try pillow beating to release anger from the body
• Talk to the person you are angry with, in the mirror
• Take deep breaths, inhaling peace and exhaling all the upset

The focus is about taking control of your anger, to change yourself and your reactions rather than expecting others to change. Remember, managing your anger is your own responsibility and nobody else’s.
